Thodupuzha, the spiritual capital of Kerala Catholics?

Kerala, often referred to as God's own country, earns its divine moniker through various historical events. One significant reason is the arrival of St. Thomas, one of the 12 Apostles of Lord Jesus Christ, in 52 AD. St. Thomas initially preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ to some Brahmin poojaris performing many great miracles, and convincing them that Jesus Christ is the true incarnated God, Who created the universe.

  2. Interesting article, While many in Kerala often conceptualize Pala as a kind of ‘Vatican City’ within the regional ecclesial landscape, I’ve increasingly felt that Thodupuzha presents a compelling alternative.

In terms of experiential spirituality, access to formative opportunities, and the density of faith-shaping institutions, it arguably functions as a more integrated spiritual hub for the state.

    1. Thank you for your insightful comment! You’ve articulated very well the unique place both Pala and Thodupuzha occupy within Kerala’s Catholic landscape.

I agree that, in the broader sense, Pala still stands as the “Catholic Capital of India” — its sheer number of priests and religious, its long-established seminaries and institutions, and its high concentration of Catholic families give it a long, undeniable heritage. In many ways, Pala represents the historic and demographic strength of Catholicism in Kerala.

At the same time, your point about Thodupuzha emerging as a vibrant spiritual hub is absolutely valid. The town’s density of Churches, perpetual adoration chapels, frequent Holy Masses, easily accessible confession times, and its overall atmosphere of lived spirituality make it feel like a deeply integrated centre of grace and renewal. In a compact radius, the opportunities for spiritual growth are truly exceptional.

So perhaps the best way to see it is this:

Pala– the traditional, institutional, and demographic heart of Kerala Catholicism.
Thodupuzha– the experiential, accessible, and devotionally intense spiritual hub.

Both enrich the Church in different ways, and together they beautifully complement each other.
