Chhattisgarh Priestly Ordination Controversy: Faith on Trial

Chhattisgarh Priest Ordination Controversy: When Religious Freedom Is Put on Trial

The Case of Jesuit Deacon Basil Hadda Raises Serious Questions About India's Constitutional Values

A nation's greatness is not measured merely by its size, economic strength, military power, or international standing. It is measured by how faithfully it protects the rights and dignity of every citizen, especially those belonging to religious minorities.

India, celebrated as the world's largest democracy, rests upon a constitutional promise that people of different religions can live together with freedom, dignity, and mutual respect. Yet, reports of interference in the religious lives of minorities raise troubling questions about whether these foundational principles are being upheld in practice.

The reported obstruction of the priestly ordination of Jesuit Deacon Basil Hadda in Chhattisgarh is one such deeply concerning incident.

A report by Shekinah TV News has drawn attention to the alleged intervention of local authorities in the ordination ceremony scheduled at Dhanwar Parish in Balrampur district. According to the report, the ceremony was postponed following questions concerning documents related to Deacon Basil Hadda's conversion to Christianity approximately three decades ago.

The report alleges that the Church produced documents, including a baptism certificate, but that officials demanded an additional conversion-related permit that the Church maintained had not been required at the time.

The precise legal basis for the administrative action requires clarification. Nevertheless, the incident raises an essential question that no democracy can afford to ignore:

Can a person's freedom of conscience and religious commitment be obstructed by administrative action without a clear and lawful justification?

A Life Dedicated to God Should Not Become a Target of Unjustified Suspicion

For a Catholic, priestly ordination is a sacred milestone. It marks the culmination of years of prayer, discernment, theological education, spiritual formation, and preparation for a life of service to God and humanity.

Deacon Basil Hadda, a member of the Society of Jesus, had reportedly completed approximately 12 years of formation and preparation for priestly ministry.

Behind such a vocation lies a profound personal commitment. It involves a willingness to dedicate one's life to proclaiming the Gospel, celebrating the sacraments, serving the poor, comforting the suffering, and accompanying people through the joys and sorrows of life.

For the candidate, his religious community, his family, and the faithful who gathered for the occasion, ordination is not an ordinary public event. It is a moment of deep spiritual significance.

When such a ceremony is reportedly interrupted because of questions concerning a conversion that took place decades earlier, the matter deserves serious scrutiny.

If there was a genuine legal concern, the authorities should have identified the applicable law and explained their decision transparently. If, however, the ceremony was obstructed without a valid legal basis, the action deserves unequivocal condemnation.

No person should have to fear that a sincere religious commitment, made in accordance with conscience, will later become a pretext for obstructing a lawful religious ceremony.

Freedom of Conscience: A Fundamental Promise of the Indian Constitution

Article 25 of the Constitution of India guarantees all persons freedom of conscience and the right freely to profess, practise, and propagate religion, subject to public order, morality, health, and the other provisions of Part III of the Constitution.

This protection belongs to every person. It is not reserved for the religious majority, nor can it be denied merely because an individual belongs to a smaller faith community.

The freedom of conscience is especially important because religion is often among the most deeply personal dimensions of human life. A person's spiritual convictions may shape their values, relationships, vocation, and understanding of their purpose in the world.

A democratic state must respect this freedom while ensuring that everyone complies with valid laws.

Article 26 also protects, subject to constitutional limitations, the rights of religious denominations to manage their own affairs in matters of religion and to establish and maintain religious and charitable institutions.

These constitutional guarantees establish an important boundary: administrative authority must be exercised within the law, with respect for fundamental rights.

The Constitution does not empower officials to decide which lawful religious commitments deserve respect and which should be treated with suspicion.

The Misuse of Anti-Conversion Laws Must Never Be Allowed

One of the most significant issues raised by the Shekinah TV News report concerns the relationship between anti-conversion laws and individual religious freedom.

Laws intended to prevent unlawful religious conversion must be applied according to their actual provisions. Where allegations of coercion, fraud, or prohibited inducement arise, the authorities may investigate them in accordance with the applicable law.

But there is a fundamental distinction between preventing unlawful coercion and questioning a person's freedom to choose a religion voluntarily.

An allegation is not proof. Suspicion is not evidence. And the mere fact that a person has embraced Christianity does not establish that the conversion was unlawful.

The legal position must be determined by examining the relevant facts, the law in force at the time, and the evidence available.

In the case of Deacon Basil Hadda, the report raises questions about a demand for a document relating to a conversion said to have taken place approximately 30 years earlier. Whether that document was legally required must be established through the applicable legislation and the official explanation.

If a document was not required under the law in force at the relevant time, demanding it retrospectively would raise serious concerns about the legality of the action.

No law should be interpreted or enforced in a manner that turns a safeguard against coercion into an instrument for intimidating people who have freely chosen their faith.

The purpose of law is to protect people from injustice, not to make innocent citizens prove their right to believe.

Majority Rule Does Not Mean Unlimited Power Over Minorities

Democracy is more than elections, political victories, and the authority of the majority.

A genuine democracy protects every citizen's fundamental rights, including the rights of those whose religious beliefs differ from those of the majority.

The rule of law requires public authorities to act impartially. The same standards of evidence, fairness, and accountability must apply regardless of a person's religion.

If a majority community enjoys the freedom to worship, conduct religious ceremonies, and educate its children in its faith, members of minority communities must receive equal protection under the Constitution.

Christian citizens do not seek exemption from the law. They seek the equal application of the law.

The same principle applies to Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Hindus, and every other religious community.

When the rights of one minority are weakened, the security of fundamental rights throughout society is put at risk. A government that fails to protect one community's lawful freedoms weakens public confidence in its commitment to justice for all.

The true test of democracy is not whether the majority can exercise its power, but whether that power is restrained by justice, constitutional values, and respect for the rights of every citizen.

Administrative Power Must Serve Justice, Not Intimidation

Government officials are entrusted with considerable authority. That authority exists to maintain public order, enforce the law, protect citizens, and ensure the fair functioning of public institutions.

It must never become a means of arbitrary interference in people's religious lives.

If officials believe that a religious ceremony violates a legal requirement, they must identify the applicable provision, establish the relevant facts, and act within the limits of their lawful powers.

A complaint by an individual or group cannot, by itself, establish that a religious ceremony is illegal. Allegations must be examined impartially, and decisions must be supported by a lawful basis.

The Shekinah TV News report raises questions about whether the administrative intervention in Deacon Basil Hadda's case met these standards.

The authorities should explain why the ordination was stopped, which legal provision was invoked, and why the documents reportedly presented by the Church were considered insufficient.

If the action was lawful, a transparent explanation should establish that. If it was unlawful or disproportionate, appropriate corrective action should follow.

Silence cannot resolve a controversy that concerns fundamental rights.

The power of the state is strongest when it is exercised with fairness, restraint, transparency, and respect for the Constitution.

Religious Freedom Is Essential for India's Social Harmony

India's religious diversity is one of its defining characteristics. For generations, people belonging to different faiths have shared neighbourhoods, workplaces, educational institutions, and public spaces.

That coexistence depends upon mutual respect and confidence that the law protects everyone equally.

Reports of attacks on minority communities, interruptions of prayer meetings, and interference with places of worship in parts of India have heightened concerns among Christians and other religious minorities. Each incident must be investigated on its own facts, but the broader need for impartial law enforcement cannot be ignored.

Religious harmony cannot be sustained merely through public appeals for peace. It requires practical protection against intimidation, discrimination, and unlawful interference.

It also requires political leaders and public officials to reject religious hatred and avoid allowing allegations about one community to become a justification for collective suspicion.

A Christian should not have to approach a prayer meeting with fear. A priest should not have to worry that a lawful religious ceremony will be arbitrarily interrupted. A citizen should not be made to feel that exercising a constitutional right is an act requiring special permission beyond what the law demands.

These are not demands for preferential treatment. They are demands for equal citizenship.

Lessons From Nicaragua: A Warning Against State Interference in Religious Life

The controversy also brings to mind international concerns about religious freedom in Nicaragua, where the government led by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo has faced substantial criticism over its treatment of the Catholic Church, including restrictions affecting religious institutions and clergy.

India and Nicaragua have different political and constitutional systems, and the two situations should not be treated as identical. Nevertheless, developments in countries where religious institutions face state pressure demonstrate why the protection of religious liberty requires constant vigilance.

The lesson is simple: when governments begin to treat independent religious activity as something to be controlled through intimidation or arbitrary restrictions, the damage extends beyond individual religious communities.

Freedom of conscience, freedom of association, and democratic accountability are closely connected. Protecting religious institutions from unjustified interference is part of protecting the wider civic space in which citizens can exercise their rights.

India's democratic traditions and constitutional framework provide a strong basis for safeguarding these freedoms. That is precisely why any credible allegation of arbitrary interference must be investigated rather than dismissed.

What Must Happen Now?

The controversy surrounding Deacon Basil Hadda's ordination calls for a clear and responsible response.

First, the Chhattisgarh administration should publicly explain the legal grounds on which the ceremony was stopped.

Second, the authorities should clarify whether the demanded conversion-related document was legally required at the time of the reported conversion.

Third, the circumstances surrounding the interruption should be examined impartially, with the Church's account and the administration's explanation both considered.

Fourth, if no lawful impediment exists, the candidate and the Church should be able to proceed with the ordination in accordance with the law and the Church's religious discipline.

Finally, the authorities should ensure that religious minorities can conduct lawful religious activities without intimidation or discriminatory treatment.

These steps would not undermine the law. They would strengthen public confidence in it.

The rule of law means that neither religious institutions nor government officials stand above the Constitution. It also means that no citizen should be deprived of a fundamental right without lawful justification.

An Appeal to India's Democratic Conscience

The reported obstruction of Deacon Basil Hadda's priestly ordination is a matter that should concern everyone who values liberty, equality, and justice.

It should concern Christians because it touches their religious freedom. It should concern members of every other faith because the same constitutional principles protect them. And it should concern every Indian who believes that public power must remain accountable to the Constitution.

We must not allow religious differences to become grounds for suspicion or hostility. We must not allow legal safeguards to be distorted into instruments of discrimination. And we must not remain indifferent when credible allegations of unjustified interference with fundamental rights arise.

The proper response is neither hatred nor retaliation. It is truth, lawful action, accountability, and a renewed commitment to constitutional values.

India does not become weaker when its minorities exercise their rights. India becomes weaker when those rights are denied.

A truly strong nation is one in which a person can follow a religious vocation without fear, a community can worship without intimidation, and public authorities protect the freedom of every citizen without discrimination.

Let the authorities clarify the facts. Let the law be applied fairly. Let every unlawful interference be addressed. And let the constitutional promise of religious freedom remain a living reality for all Indians.

Protecting religious freedom is not merely a Christian concern. It is a test of India's commitment to democracy, justice, and the dignity of every human being.

👧👦 Six Age Groups

The Logos Quiz is special because it is not restricted to children or young people.

Participants are divided into six age groups — A, B, C, D, E and F — so that people of different generations can participate and compete within their respective categories.

The Kerala Catholic Bible Society officially describes the Logos Quiz as having six age groups and states that evaluation and prizes are based on these categories.

The 2027 age-group birth-date cut-offs should be followed exactly as given in the 2027 registration notification/registration system.

The six groups are:

  • A Group

  • B Group

  • C Group

  • D Group

  • E Group

  • F Group

This six-category structure allows children, teenagers, young adults, middle-aged participants and senior citizens to take part in the great Bible-learning movement.

💰 Only ₹20 to Take Part!

One of the most attractive features of the 27th Logos Quiz is its extremely low registration fee.

Examination Fee: ₹20

For just ₹20, a participant receives an opportunity to undertake a structured study of 48 chapters of the Holy Bible and participate in one of Kerala's largest Catholic Bible competitions.

The spiritual value of such an opportunity is far greater than the registration fee.

📝 Where Can You Register?

The Logos Quiz is traditionally organised through parishes and Catholic institutions that serve as examination centres.

The official Kerala Catholic Bible Society explains that a parish or Catholic institution can function as a Logos examination centre and that participants can register there.

Therefore, those wishing to participate should contact their parish or the Logos Quiz coordinator at their local Catholic institution.

The registration period for 2027 is: June 1 to July 31, 2027

Do not wait until the last few days.

⏰ Examination on September 26, 2027

The first-level All Kerala Logos Examination will be held on:

Sunday, September 26, 2027.... from 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

Participants should reach their examination centre sufficiently early and carry whatever hall-ticket or registration documents are required by the organisers.

The Logos Quiz has traditionally used objective-type questions. Previous official Logos question papers show multiple-choice questions and a designated answer sheet for participants.

🏆 More Than Just a Bible Competition

The Logos Quiz is not simply another examination.

The official Kerala Catholic Bible Society explains that its principal purpose is to give everyone an opportunity to study the Bible prayerfully and imbibe the message of the Word of God. It also provides opportunities for attractive prizes, shields, gold medals, trophies and certificates.

Therefore, participants should not approach the Logos Quiz merely with the ambition of obtaining a high score.

The real objective should be:

Read the Word of God.
Understand the Word of God.
Meditate on the Word of God.
Live the Word of God.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Make Logos Quiz a Family Bible Project

One of the greatest benefits of the Logos Quiz is that it can bring the entire family together around the Holy Bible.

Instead of each person spending the evening separately with a mobile phone or television, a family can spend even 30 minutes reading the day's portion together.

Parents can ask questions.

Children can search for answers.

Grandparents can share what they remember from the Holy Bible.

In this way, preparation for the Logos Quiz can itself become a beautiful family Bible apostolate.

The Kerala Catholic Bible Society has also established the Logos Familia Quiz, specifically to encourage Bible study within families.

📚 How to Prepare for the 2027 Logos Quiz

There are 48 chapters to study. Starting early is therefore a great advantage.

1. Read the actual Bible first

Do not depend only on guides, notes or question banks.

Read the Biblical text itself.

2. Read each chapter several times

On the first reading, understand the story.

On the second reading, identify important persons and events.

On subsequent readings, pay attention to details.

3. Make chapter-wise notes

Write down:

  • Important names

  • Places

  • Events

  • Numbers

  • Relationships

  • Important statements

  • Who said something

  • To whom it was said

  • Important Biblical teachings

  • Significant incidents

4. Give special attention to John 13–21

With 9 chapters, the Gospel according to John forms the important part of the 2027 syllabus.

Study it carefully and repeatedly.

5. Study 1 Samuel 8–22 systematically

Make a timeline of the important events involving Samuel, Saul and David.

6. Do not neglect the shorter letters

The four chapters of Philippians and four chapters of Colossians may appear small compared with John's Gospel, but every detail can be important in a Bible quiz.

7. Practise previous Logos questions

The Kerala Catholic Bible Society maintains a collection of previous-year Logos Quiz question papers and an online sample-test facility.

Practising these questions is one of the best ways to understand the style of the examination.

🌟 Why Should You Participate?

You do not need to be a Bible scholar to participate.

You do not need to be a child or a young person.

You do not need to expect a prize.

You simply need the desire to know the Word of God more deeply.

The six age categories make it possible for people of different generations to participate. The examination is conducted through Catholic parishes and institutions, making it possible for the Logos movement to reach Catholic communities throughout Kerala and beyond.

And the preparation itself can become a spiritual blessing.

Who are very 'lucky' persons? Bumper lottery winners?
